One morning, she woke up extra early to get ready for an important staff meeting. Scooting down a side road at over seventy miles per hour, she noticed flashing lights in her rear view mirror. "Ugh," she grunted. "One week into this job and I’m already getting a ticket." Still too early for many of the gas stations to be open, she pulled into a lighted space on the side of the road.

Under the lights, she noticed the police car was unmarked. A trooper got out of the vehicle and paced toward her. She rolled down the window a little bit as he approached. "Good morning, ma’am," he said. "Do you know how fast you were going through that thirty five mile an hour zone?" Rachel rolled her eyes and said, "I’m sorry, officer, but I don’t know. How fast do you believe I was going?" "Let’s not worry about what I think, just yet," he said. "I’ll need you to step out of the car, please, ma’am." Rachel thought it was strange that he hadn’t asked for her license or registration. And when she took a longer look at him, now that her eyes were adjusting to the light, she noticed he wasn’t wearing a uniform.

"Officer, could I just see your identification clearly, please?" she asked. "Ma’am, I order you to get out of this car RIGHT NOW," he demanded. Rachel observed that he looked far too unkempt to be a real police officer. At the same moment, the man tried to reach in through Rachel’s car window. She reached up for her visor and pulled down her emergency canister of pepper spray.

Aiming right through the crack in the window, she nailed her attacker right in the eyes. As he stumbled into the road, she started up her car and sped up the highway. She found an open gas station a few miles up the road, where she called police.

They found her attacker stumbling through the woods not far from where Rachel left him. It turns out he had been preying on women in the early morning hours for months, but hadn’t been caught. Rachel not only saved herself, she helped put a dangerous man behind bars.

Now sixteen, and saving up his cash for college, he ran the cash register on weekends when the owner took a few hours off to spend time with his daughter and grandkids.

Weekend afternoons were pretty quiet in the neighborhood. Most folks did their shopping at the mall these days, though many of the office workers still stopped by during the week. For Robbie, it usually meant a chance to catch up on inventory or even the rare opportunity to get some more homework done.

Courtney, who helped her father run the store, had spent some time and energy upgrading the store’s security in the past few months. Suddenly, the man darted toward Robbie, eyes ablaze. He bellowed, "Yeah! You can help me find all the money in your cash register, punk! And when you’re done with that, I want you to come in to the back room and get that safe open!"

Robbie noticed a bulge in the man’s sweatshirt, and didn’t want to risk what might happen if that was any kind of weapon.

In a split second, he grabbed the C2 Taser from underneath the counter.

Robbie locked the laser sight onto his target and pulled the trigger. Even though the robber was still about fifteen feet away, two small darts found their mark and channeled 50,000 volts of electricity over the pair of wires. The criminal collapsed, and Robbie knew from biology class that the attacker’s muscles wouldn’t stop contracting until he was stuck in the fetal position.

After the cops and paramedics arrived, Robbie learned that the robber was high on meth, looking for cash for a quick score.

On the last day of the live training camp, Larkin and crew explained the difference between social aggression and asocial violence. Social aggression occurs when one person tries to assert dominance over another without the goal of killing or maiming them: for example, someone pulling up next to you, cursing, and flipping you off because he thought you cut him off. Asocial violence is a markedly different issue: for example, someone driving his car right into yours, striking your car full-on, and sending you off the road and down a cliff. These discussions helped demarcate the differences between fighting, aggression, and violence - words that are used almost interchangeably in our society, yet with markedly different meanings to one who has a clear understanding of them.

"You never know just by looking who’s a sociopath and who isn’t," said Larkin. "If anything, my years of studying human violence and creating TFT have made me more aware of proper conduct, good manners, and humility. Simply because I don’t want to run the risk of either losing my own life or potentially killing someone else, I’m the first to say ‘Please excuse me’ or ‘I’m sorry’ even if I’m not the one at fault." Torin capped the discussion by saying, "If you have a choice to use violence, it’s probably just an instance of social aggression."

Throughout the weekend, the instructors spent an incredible amount of time conditioning each participant’s thought process. By Sunday afternoon, we saw that the target focus principle was applicable in any situation, even with a weapon or against an armed attacker or in multiple attacker situations. Constantly reviewing and updating their own teaching and training methods, Larkin and his instructional team made certain that everyone who came was capable of surviving a real situation if they walked out the door. Indeed, more than one of the participants gave the course the highest possible endorsement. As seasoned practitioners with more than a year of training with Larkin, they eagerly came back to attend the same live-training sessions that total beginners were coming to.

For me, a veteran of the martial arts and medical professional, I saw and heard
explanations that would be the envy of any trauma specialist along with principles that some traditional martial arts only cover in the black belt levels, yet taught effectively to beginners over the course of a weekend. Without cloaking techniques in mysticism, without diluting the realities of combat in unrealistic sport formats, and without sacrificing safety for realism, Target-Focus Training delivered an uncompromising course on the intelligent and responsible use of violence. I’d have to say that Larkin’s TFT is right on target for anyone serious about survival.

Jake was Brad’s loyal German Shepherd. For twelve years, he guarded Brad’s sporting goods store from would-be thieves and neighborhood troublemakers. Even as the neighborhood got a little worse, Jake kept the peace.

Brad’s store was the only one on the block without any graffiti. Nobody, it seemed, wanted a run in with a big, angry guard dog.

Few people knew that Jake was really a sweetheart, lavishing Brad with kisses every time he’d open the store in the morning.

Brad’s daughter, Marcy, kept the store’s books, and paid a visit to her father every Thursday. She knew the old man couldn’t afford to install a state of the art security system. But she also knew that he was a little too fragile to try and train another big dog.

She brought her father a gift on her next visit. "This," she announced proudly, "will keep Jake’s legend alive in the neighborhood."

She explained to Brad that the Electronic Watch Dog used infrared sensors to watch the store at night, just like Jake did. When intruders showed up at either the front or the back doors, the box would bark. And it would bark louder and louder until the disturbance went away.

That Saturday night, two teenage boys strolled up the sidewalk. The midnight streetlight stretched their shadows halfway up the block. They banged and pulled on security gates as they talked about the trouble they could cause.

"Didn’t old man Benson’s dog just die?" asked the tall one.

"I think I heard Billy say something like that," replied the short one, "I could sure use some new sneakers!"

They hustled up to the front window, but before they could even try to break in, they heard loud barking from inside the store. And it was getting louder.

"Yo, I thought you said that dog was dead," cried the short hooligan.

"He must have got a new one," said his partner in crime, "I ain’t messin’ with no dog!"

The two juveniles hustled away around the corner as fast as their legs could carry them.

Jake’s legacy remains intact. He’s still a presence in Benson’s Sporting Goods, with a picture above the cash register - and the loud bark from the Electronic Watch Dog.

Lori generally kept the flower pot sitting on the kitchen counter when it contained flowers,and on the top shelf next to other empty pots when it didn’t. Ted told her that he thought the flower pot safe was an odd place for her to keep her most beloved possessions. But, there they sat, right out in the open.

He was pretty certain that a burglar would go through drawers and closets, or break into any obvious safe he or she came across.

As Ted drove home, he thought about the various reasons a flower pot safe, or any diversion safe, would be useful. He lived in a low crime area, but he had a lot of company and so did his three teenage boys. You’d like to believe that you can trust everyone, but the reality is that you simply can’t.

Once he arrived home, Ted ordered two flower pot safes of his own.

Winter made things worse. On top of feeling cold, Leslie couldn’t stand to walk down the street in the dark. In the middle of December, four in the afternoon may as well have been four in the morning.

For the first few months, everything was great. Carla slept well through the night, which meant that Gary and Barb enjoyed a lot more sleep than most new parents.

About six months later, Gary and Barb started losing sleep. Their security system would go off, for no reason, in the middle of the night.

The first time it happened, Barb bolted out of bed toward the baby’s room while Gary wielded a bowling trophy in the hallway. No robbers, though, fortunately. They assumed it was a problem with the system and went back to bed.

The second night it happened, Gary just switched the system off. It took Barb almost two hours to get Carla back to sleep. And by that time, Gary was supposed to be getting up for work anyway.

The alarm installer showed up the next morning with a set of diagnostics. After racking up about two hours worth of service fees, he declared nothing wrong with the system.

That night, Gary and Barb fought over who would have to get out of bed to shut off their useless alarm system.

The next day, Gary tried to enjoy a round of golf with Barb’s dad. When Gary explained his fatigue, his father-in-law stopped him short.

One night, one of the diners got a little out of hand. She could put up with rude customers, and she could even tolerate patrons who had a little too much to drink. She and her boss agreed that anyone who tried to lay hands on her or on any of the wait staff would end up enjoying the rest of their meal "to go."

So her boss ejected a customer who looked like a rumpled college professor after he tried to pinch Lacy’s bottom. The guy created a huge stink, but the customers applauded when he fell down the steps and landed on the sidewalk with a thud.

Later that night, after Lacy banked out and counted her tip money, she headed back down the street to her place. She thought she heard footsteps behind her, but saw nobody when she swung around.

Another block away from the restaurant, she thought she heard a trash can rattle. Still, she couldn’t see anyone in the shadows.

Only a few steps away from her building’s front door, Lacy heard someone sneeze. She whipped around to see the drunken customer from earlier that night.

He lunged at her, shouting, "I’ll show you!"

Although she wished she had more money in her budget for a more elaborate security system, Karen figured she’d be able to reinvest some of the profits from her business into a high-tech solution pretty quickly.
