Jake was Brad’s loyal German Shepherd. For twelve years, he guarded Brad’s sporting goods store from would-be thieves and neighborhood troublemakers. Even as the neighborhood got a little worse, Jake kept the peace.

Brad’s store was the only one on the block without any graffiti. Nobody, it seemed, wanted a run in with a big, angry guard dog.

Few people knew that Jake was really a sweetheart, lavishing Brad with kisses every time he’d open the store in the morning.

Brad’s daughter, Marcy, kept the store’s books, and paid a visit to her father every Thursday. She knew the old man couldn’t afford to install a state of the art security system. But she also knew that he was a little too fragile to try and train another big dog.

She brought her father a gift on her next visit. "This," she announced proudly, "will keep Jake’s legend alive in the neighborhood."

She explained to Brad that the Electronic Watch Dog used infrared sensors to watch the store at night, just like Jake did. When intruders showed up at either the front or the back doors, the box would bark. And it would bark louder and louder until the disturbance went away.

That Saturday night, two teenage boys strolled up the sidewalk. The midnight streetlight stretched their shadows halfway up the block. They banged and pulled on security gates as they talked about the trouble they could cause.

"Didn’t old man Benson’s dog just die?" asked the tall one.

"I think I heard Billy say something like that," replied the short one, "I could sure use some new sneakers!"

They hustled up to the front window, but before they could even try to break in, they heard loud barking from inside the store. And it was getting louder.

"Yo, I thought you said that dog was dead," cried the short hooligan.

"He must have got a new one," said his partner in crime, "I ain’t messin’ with no dog!"

The two juveniles hustled away around the corner as fast as their legs could carry them.

Jake’s legacy remains intact. He’s still a presence in Benson’s Sporting Goods, with a picture above the cash register - and the loud bark from the Electronic Watch Dog.

Lori generally kept the flower pot sitting on the kitchen counter when it contained flowers,and on the top shelf next to other empty pots when it didn’t. He was pretty certain that a burglar would go through drawers and closets, or break into any obvious safe he or she came across.

He lived in a low crime area, but he had a lot of company and so did his three teenage boys. You’d like to believe that you can trust everyone, but the reality is that you simply can’t.

Winter made things worse. On top of feeling cold, Leslie couldn’t stand to walk down the street in the dark. In the middle of December, four in the afternoon may as well have been four in the morning.

For the first few months, everything was great. Carla slept well through the night, which meant that Gary and Barb enjoyed a lot more sleep than most new parents.

About six months later, Gary and Barb started losing sleep. Their security system would go off, for no reason, in the middle of the night.

The first time it happened, Barb bolted out of bed toward the baby’s room while Gary wielded a bowling trophy in the hallway. No robbers, though, fortunately. They assumed it was a problem with the system and went back to bed.

The second night it happened, Gary just switched the system off. It took Barb almost two hours to get Carla back to sleep. And by that time, Gary was supposed to be getting up for work anyway.

The alarm installer showed up the next morning with a set of diagnostics. After racking up about two hours worth of service fees, he declared nothing wrong with the system.

One night, one of the diners got a little out of hand. She could put up with rude customers, and she could even tolerate patrons who had a little too much to drink. She and her boss agreed that anyone who tried to lay hands on her or on any of the wait staff would end up enjoying the rest of their meal "to go."

So her boss ejected a customer who looked like a rumpled college professor after he tried to pinch Lacy’s bottom. The guy created a huge stink, but the customers applauded when he fell down the steps and landed on the sidewalk with a thud.

Later that night, after Lacy banked out and counted her tip money, she headed back down the street to her place. She thought she heard footsteps behind her, but saw nobody when she swung around.

Another block away from the restaurant, she thought she heard a trash can rattle. Still, she couldn’t see anyone in the shadows.

Only a few steps away from her building’s front door, Lacy heard someone sneeze. She whipped around to see the drunken customer from earlier that night.

He lunged at her, shouting, "I’ll show you!"

Although she wished she had more money in her budget for a more elaborate security system, Karen figured she’d be able to reinvest some of the profits from her business into a high-tech solution pretty quickly.

The only thing she didn’t enjoy about her volunteer work was trying to find a safe parking place in the neighborhood. Some nights, she really understood why so many of these kids were at risk.

"I’m so sorry," Brenda apologized, "This guy keeps calling me at three in the morning. Every night, he tries to tell me these nasty things. I keep hoping he’ll stop, but he doesn’t!"

Ginny clucked, "I bet the phone company said they couldn’t do anything about it, huh?"

"Yeah," Brenda exclaimed, "since he’s not actually threatening me, and he’s blocking his caller ID, they’re helpless. They actually told me to turn off my ringer. I can’t do that! What if there’s an emergency when the kids are at their dad’s?"

"The same thing happened to me last year," whispered Ginny. "Wanna know how I got rid of the guy?"

"He had no clue," exclaimed Ginny, "because it sounds so real. I’ve got it on my answering machine, if you want to hear it."

Ginny whipped out her cell phone and dialed her home number, handing the phone to Brenda as it rang. When the machine picked up, Brenda’s eyes bulged with surprise.

"No way," Brenda gasped. "There’s no way that’s your voice. You sound like a guy!"

"It’s great," Ginny confessed, "though I did have to explain to my Mom why some guy was answering my phone. But it gets better. The guy called back one more time."

"What’d you do?" asked Brenda? "

This time, I pressed the button that made it sound like I had a baby crying in the background," giggled Ginny. "I switched on my male voice and told him that I’d better not find the guy that woke up my kid. I swear I heard him drop the phone, he tried to hang up so fast!"

"That’s it," cried Brenda. "You’ve got to tell me where you got that thing."

Managing one of the trendiest nightclubs in town, she got to spend her evenings rubbing elbows with rock stars, actors, and many of the city’s elite. Her boss converted an old warehouse by the docks into a fantasy world for their guests. It kept costs down, but it also made for a pretty treacherous walk down to the parking lot at 4am.

"I’ll show you!" he cried, as he pounced on Kerrie. He dug the Stun Master into her abdomen and tried to activate it, not realizing that the wrist strap also serves as a disable pin - once the Stun Master left Kerrie’s hands, it was useless.

Kerrie didn’t get her job on looks alone. She kicked her attacker in the shin and clocked him on the jaw as a pair of police officers raced to the scene of the struggle. She made a mental note to thank her boss for the gift - and to ask for a raise.

Then George got sick.

Before very long, Susan was on her own again. She wanted to hang on to the good memories of that house, feeling confident that she and her neighbors were driving the bad element off the block.

Still, she always made sure she was prepared for the worst. And when the lights went out on her during a really violent thunderstorm, she shuffled downstairs to the broom closet for her favorite flashlight, a gadget George had bought for her for their last Christmas together.

Sixteen and a half inches long, but still very light, Susan loved how it brightened up a room. She turned it on, and looked for her emergency radio. Red and blue lights flickered through the windows, so Susan figured that the power would come back soon.

As she swiveled around, the bright beam of light illuminated a strange face. Susan gasped.

"Don’t make a sound," growled the stranger, "or I’ll hurt you."

It didn’t even take Susan a heartbeat to lunge forward with the flashlight. Her attacker grinned, expecting to deflect a blow. Instead, he received a 200,000-volt jolt of electricity from the flashlight’s built-in stun baton. Susan loved that flashlight for a reason.

Rushing over to the window, she activated the flashlight’s piercing alarm. Cops outside saw her waving the light and rushed up to her building. She found out later that her attacker was a convicted criminal who tried to escape when his prisoner transport vehicle crashed into a utility pole.

That explained the blackout - and the presence of this scary individual in Susan’s home. The police sergeant had a blast explaining to the detectives how Susan used an innocent looking flashlight to nab one of the city’s most wanted felons. And Susan felt George’s presence in their home even stronger than ever.
