Gary and Barb couldn’t wait to bring their new baby daughter, Carla, home from the hospital. They’d been preparing since they day they found out Barb was pregnant. Gary baby-proofed their whole house, even installing new floors. He capped off his planning by installing a new security system with motion detectors throughout the house.

For the first few months, everything was great. Carla slept well through the night, which meant that Gary and Barb enjoyed a lot more sleep than most new parents.

About six months later, Gary and Barb started losing sleep. Their security system would go off, for no reason, in the middle of the night.

The first time it happened, Barb bolted out of bed toward the baby’s room while Gary wielded a bowling trophy in the hallway. No robbers, though, fortunately. They assumed it was a problem with the system and went back to bed.

The second night it happened, Gary just switched the system off. It took Barb almost two hours to get Carla back to sleep. And by that time, Gary was supposed to be getting up for work anyway.

The alarm installer showed up the next morning with a set of diagnostics. After racking up about two hours worth of service fees, he declared nothing wrong with the system.

That night, Gary and Barb fought over who would have to get out of bed to shut off their useless alarm system.

The next day, Gary tried to enjoy a round of golf with Barb’s dad. When Gary explained his fatigue, his father-in-law stopped him short.

"Wait a second," interrupted the retired executive, "you have motion detectors? In a BABY’s room?"

He explained that the moment the baby stirs in her sleep, the super-sensitive motion sensors treat her the same as a criminal trying to break in to the house. Instead, he suggested, they could try a device he used when his job sent him overseas.

"I would hang my Keep-I on the hotel room door," he explained. "Instead of watching you, it keeps an eye on the air pressure in your room. Any time someone tried to break in, that thing would practically wake the dead. So while my buddies all got their wallets stolen from those cheesy hotels, I slept just fine."

A few days later, Gary unpacked his new Keep-I and hung it from the inside of Carla’s bedroom door. He played with the window to see if he could fool the machine - to no luck. It caught him every time.

The middle of the night wake-ups ended. Knowing that his family was safe from intruders, Gary slept as well as his father-in-law in those foreign hotels - just fine.
